U13 Girls team win the Aldershot & Farnborough District Schools Cup and complete the double
Having already won the league, Weydon’s U13 girls team sealed the double with a thrilling victory over Collingwood College in Camberley in the Aldershot & Farnborough District Schools Cup Final held at Aldershot Town’s EBB stadium.
A fantastic stadium, programmes, spectators, match officials and the cup gleaming on the sidelines, all created a real sense of occasion.
In a spectacular display of girls football, Weydon came out on top with a 2-0 win. They went one up with Liv Potter’s great run on goal in the first half and victory was sealed in the final stages from a set piece by Amy Thompson.
The girls had one last chance for glory this season with the Surrey County Cup but narrowly missed out to Surbiton High School 5-4 in extra time. Having come from 2-0 down and against opposition that made it to the semi-final of the National Cup, Weydon can be justifiably proud of their team’s performance.
There’s undoubtedly an exciting future ahead for this talented group of girls.
Coach Grant Tubridy said “This group of girls have really encapsulated the spirit of the lionesses and are at the forefront of the growth in the women’s game across the local area. Once again, they have had an incredible season after their success last year in the league and I am optimistic that they can build upon their achievements this year. We must celebrate now we are at the end of the season but also look towards the future where we will certainly work even harder to win those trophies that eluded us. As a team their seasonal stats are impressive reading P19 W17 D0 L2 (one on penalties, one in extra time) GF 79 GA 23”.
Captain Isobel Kandak said “It was great to get to the finals of the District Cup and we were desperate to win after our disappointment last year. The atmosphere inside the stadium was amazing and really inspired us to play well. It was a sensational feeling when we won and the crowd cheered us as we lifted the trophy. It was something we’ll never forget.”
