'HappyHead' triumphs in student choice WMAT Book Award
Last Thursday students from Farnham Heath End, Rodborough and Woolmer Hill joined students from Weydon school to celebrate the third WMAT Book Award. Established in 2021, the award celebrates student voice and the best of British authors writing Young Adult fiction today.
Mark Sharman, Executive Director of the WMAT, opened the event by reminding the students how important their voices and opinions are and after some lively and engaging discussion, the students cast a vote for their favourite title. Before the winner was announced, students were visited by last year’s winner, Danielle Jawando who gave a presentation and hosted a Q&A session before announcing the 2023/24 winner as Josh Silver for the dystopian title ‘HappyHead’. Angela Daniels, LRC Manager at Weydon school commented: “The event is always an incredible occasion and it is wonderful to hear the students sharing their different views and opinions. ‘HappyHead’ is a such popular winner and we hope to welcome Josh next year to meet the students and accept his award”.
