2020 Admissions Policy Consultation

We are incredibly grateful for the support the school receives from both the community and families within our local area and we are very fortunate to be oversubscribed year on year; however we do acknowledge that this demand for school places causes a huge level of anxiety and worry for parents in our Partner Primary Schools.

We are at the beginning of a decade where the number of students in secondary schools will rise significantly. The continued success of the primary provision and sixth form provision in our local area has made Farnham and Weydon a very attractive proposition for parents expressing the preference as to where they would like their children to be educated.

Our expansion project was finished in 2017 and this was designed to accommodate 5 schools years of 308 students in each year group (308 being the PAN, Published Admissions Number); a total number of 1540 from the Year 2020 onwards. The school has worked with the Local Authority to accept over the PAN in the last few years in order to alleviate the demand in the local area. It has been recognised by the Local Authority that Weydon is at its capacity and cannot take any more students.

It is government policy that any school should consult all its stakeholders prior to implementing new or updated Admissions Arrangements. The consultation lasts six weeks and will commence on 9th November 2018 and finish on 21st December 2018.

This consultation and then forthcoming new policy will not affect the admissions round for September 2019, e.g. students currently in Year 6. It will affect students currently in Year 5 and their families considering an application for the September 2020 intake into Weydon School.

The proposed changes and additional clarification around the existing arrangements are highlighted & italicised in the attached document. The main proposed changes are:

  • a clarification around wording on one of the bullet points regarding siblings
  • an increase in Published Admission Numbers (PAN)
  • a change the wording around Looked After Children and Previously Looked After Children
The school, Admissions Sub-Committee of the Governing Body and the Full Local Governing Body considered many different options and concluded that no one option was going to fairly solve the fundamental issue that there are more students in the Partner Primary Schools than the school can accommodate. Every option we considered would cause some concern and anxiety.

Should you wish to make any comments with regards to these proposed changes please email 2020@weydonschool.surrey.sch.uk and let us know your views. Please note that only responses which are fully completed with the respondent’s name and address will be accepted.

After the closing date, responses will be collated and presented to the Admissions Committee of the Local Governing Body. Its decision will then need to be ratified by the Full Local Governing Body by 28th February 2019. Once determined, the final admission arrangements will be placed on our website.
